Colton and the entire wagon train face many difficulties. Colton's mother is deathly ill and his little brother has died along the way. Other families are hungry to the point of slaughtering another families oxen. The spokes on one of the wheels on Colton's wagon breaks during the middle of a thunderstorm, too.

Noah L. said...

Some hazards were a wheels breaking or ox dieing, and even accidental shootings. These are all hazards while on the trail, just to list a few. Also attacks of hostile Native Americans. Animal attacks, and other problems.

There have been many hazards and difficulties on this journey so far. One has been the lack off food and water. Colton had to drink dirty water along with the oxen because they were running low on water.Another difficulty is the weather. The heat and the storms cause alot of problems. They had a terrible storm which made it almost impossible for the wagons and oxen to travel.

Colton's family and some of the other families have crossed some hazardous things on the Oregon Trail, such as, coming across some people that are, "unknown," like indians or people of a different race. They have also faced things like, getting fatigue as they are walking, starving of hunger, wagons being let loose, deathly ill, and some things along those lines.

Some of the hazards in Colton's travel include severe weather, exhaustion, and water shortage. An example of severe weather is when Colton's wagon almost gets struck by lightning, and an example of exhaustion is where Colton and Althea are forced to push the wagon with their two oxen.

Colton faced many difficulities that include: being shot in the leg by his father, Colton's father abandoning him, losing 2 of his oxen, and being discreminated against by the wagon train for his race

Colton has to face pretty tough obstacles during the trip on the wagon train. He has to deal with a huge thunderstorm that causes them to lose the rest of the wagon train. He also has to face the his broken wheel and the searing heat. Finally he has to deal with his two dead oxen. With them gone, he might get stuck in the desert.

On the Oregon trail Colton and other families would face multiple threats such as animals, Cholera, hostile Indians as well as being run over by wagons. Colton and his family had a animal experience early in the journey when a bear was coming at his dad. In part of the story Colton mention a boy is ran over by a wagon which could be a threat going down hills. there was odds are a lot of other threats on the trail but those are just some.

There are many hazards or difficulties on this journey. One of the hazards is wagon accidents, like the boy who was ran over by a wagon. This boy was young and innocent but that’s what happens when you’re not careful. Another example of hazards or difficulties is losing oxen. This happened to Clayton when the mystery woman gave the family some steaks, later Clayton found out she made the steaks with Clayton’s oxen. When this happened the family tried to trade or sell stuff they could leave behind. When this didn't work the just had to push on to the next city.

Some of the difficulties Colton has to face is loosing his father. Also having a broken wheel and his youngest sibling passing away a few days after he was born. The last difficulties I will mention would be having to push the wagon with a younger sibling who is not very strong while having a leg that has been shot at and not yet been seen by a doctor.

There were many difficulties faced by the Wescotts. Lack of food and clean water, broken wagon wheels, accidental shootings, and sickness all affect the Wescotts and many other members of the wagon train. One difficulty faced just by the Wescotts' was the discremination shown towards them by the others. They were ignored, treated unfairly, and left behind without a second thought.

Colton and the wagon train have had to face many difficulties and hazards so far. One was disease, like Colton's mother and brother are facing. Another is being run over and killed by a wagon, like the little German boy was. Also running low on water and food which the whole wagon train faced. They also had to face blistering heat, thunderstorms, and other challenging weather.

Veronica M. said...

There are many hazards for everybody in the wagon train and for Colton's family. Some of those are catching a disease and dying or even your horses or oxen getting sick too, wagons getting stuck in rough terrain or mud, wagons breaking, not finding any food or clean water, facing the challenges of the weather, running into indians or people that could cause you harm, accidental shooting and becoming exhausted from walking.

Cole said...

Some of the hazards were Oxen dieng and then they wouldn't be able to pull the full load of their wagon. Also there were hazards of people getting shot, people getting sick, and people getting run over by the wagons, as colton said that one German boy got run over by his wagon.

Colton and other families on the wagon train have faced several difficulties on the Oregon Trail. There has been a dangerous shortage of food and Colton had to drink dirty water. Colton's baby brother died from a sickness and his mother is currently struggling with possibly the same disease which is a definite hazard. Other families in the story had a child run over by a wagon train and Colton was accidentally shot.

Vanessa M. said...

There are many hazards and difficulties that families faced on the Oregon trail for example death. Coltons family faces death with Coltons baby brother Willie. There are also many deaths with oxen and other people drinking dirty water and getting sick. Many die from starvation. Indians are also a hazard because the indians can take and scalp humans alive and leave them to bleed to death. Also wagons breaking, like wheels and axles needing to be replaced and severe storms.

Frank B said...

Some hazards on Colton's journey are lack off food, exhaustion from pulling the wagon with only him and his sister, thunderstorms(weather), his father shot him in the leg, drink dirty water because they didn't have any other water to drink, also the extreme heat causes problems for them also.

Lindsey S. said...

There were many difficulties on the Wagon Train that Colton's family and many other families had to go through. In general families suffer from lack of food and water, the weather and disease. Colton's family is affected also by losing two of their oxen, losing a baby to disease, and being discrimated from the wagon train because of there color. Also Colton is accidentally shot in the leg by his own father who then leaves the family on their own.

Madeline D. said...

According to the novel there were many different hazards and complications that Colton, his family, and some other people in the wagon to go through and overcome. First, there was no doctor so everyone had to go through many different illnesses that maybe could not be cured due to this bump in the road; including Colton's mom. Colton's mother is very ill from just having a baby, the baby was so sick that it actually died. Second, one of colton's wheels broke on his wagon causing him to fall a significant amount behind the rest of the wagon trailers. Third, this complication probably does not apply to everyone in the journey but most definitely did happen to Colton, he got shot in the leg and his dad left him to take care of his whole family as well as all of their belonging right after he got shot, BY HIS OWN FATHER!! if it were me i would have laid down and died right there, but colton held on and and kept going. these are just a few hazards and complications Colton, his family, and the wagon trailers went through.

On the Oregon Trail there were many things families had to overcome together. Sickness, lack of food and money, death of close friends and family, and broken wheels are three problems many families, including Colton’s, had to face on the long journey west. Colton’s family also had a really rough time because they were colored and many people didn’t like them because of that too. Because of all the hazards on the Oregon Trail including starvation and death many people didn’t make it.

After barely being incharge of his wagon for a day, Colton had to try and attempt to fix a broken wheel caused by a violent storm. Also, his mother became fataly sick along with Willie dying. Colton also became stranded and lost from the wagon trail multiple not like they(the wagon trail) cared. Then, someone butchered two of Colton's oxen leaving them with only two left. Those are a few hazards/difficutlies Colton and the other families faced.

There has been many difficulties in this trail voyage. Many like his wheels breaking, his ox dieing and being shot. Also his Pa leaving and his mom coming ill. Too add to that difficulties is with his brother dieing

Hannah O said...

some hazards on the oregon trail include wheels breaking, disease, so hungrey you may even eat your oxen. you could run out of food, you could get run over by a wagon and break your leg.

Colton's family and all of the rest certainly faced many difficulties. There's the possibility of getting hit by a dangerous storm through the mid-west. Also getting attacked by Indians or wild animals. Colton faced many challenges. His father shot him and his little brother died. along with the fact that his mom and sisters were counting on him. I'm sure these had to happen to some families on the road to California.

Hailey S.2 said...

Colton and his family face a lot of troubles on their way to California. I will just list a few. Some of these challenges include, his mother being deathly ill, his little brother dying, parts of his wheels (specifically spokes) breaking, animals dying, and storms.

Madeline C said...

Colton and the wagon train faced many problems. Colton's family members are sickly, his baby brother dies, the weather is very harsh, along with being fatigued and lack of water and food. But i think the hardest thing for soley Colton's family is the descrimination they are faced with. Being a mixed family, they are treated very unfair and mean.

Delaney M. said...

Some of the hazards Colton and his family have faced on the Oregon Trail are losing two of their oxen, Pa running away and the death of baby Willie. But the biggest problem that Colton's family faces is being colored and because of this, the whole family, even Pa who is white, are treated poorly.

Evan S. said...

Colton and the rest of the wagon train face many problems. The back wheel of Colton's wagon busted and just about left them stranded in the middle of nowhere. Also, Colton was afraid that the Pony Express rider was an indian. Indian attacks were pretty common on the Oregon Trail. The extreme temperatures during the day are yet another problem. When Colton's two oxen were slaughtered he had to get off the wagon and push from behind. Sickness is a struggle too, as Colton's mother and brother got very sick.

Caitlyn K said...

many difficulties were faced by both the Westcott family and their wagon train. Some of these are oxen and horses dying, family members getting sick, wheels breaking, acidential shootings, and even crossing raging rivers and going mamy days through deserts without food and water.

Dallas V. said...

Not only colton, but the wagon train has had difficulties. Fist, coltons brother has died. Also his him mom is very sick. Lastly, the lack of food on the trip has been deadly.

Danielle B said...

some problems Colton and the wagon train face would include accidental shootings, illnesses, and broken wagon wheels. there are also native american attacks and familes getting so hungrt that they kill another families oxen to survive. these are just some of many difficulties colton and the whole wagon train faces along the way.

Jack S. said...

There have been many dangers and hazards along the trail for the Wescott family and others. Colton's dad had an accidental shooting twice. The spokes of the Wescott wagon's wheel broke. Also, their oxen were accidentally butchered so now they're down to half their pull animals. In another family, a boy got ran over by his own wagon. Lack of medicine and doctors has caused illness and death. Coyotes are a threat at night. Weather is a constant problem from heat to storms and lightning.

Ethan P. said...

The hardships of the journey to California were great in number and there were many examples in the novel. A sample of thes are as follows: harsh weather (the storm that causes the trail to become treracherous), accidental injuries (Colton being shot/ the German boy being killed), infection (the man in the shack with the maggots in his chest), heatstroke (possibly Colton's father's behavior and possibly Willie's death), wagon damage (the spokes of the wheel breaking), and starvation (other families slaughtering their oxen for food). These are but a few of the hazzards on the Oregon Trail.

Marissa Z. said...

There have been many hazards for Colton’s family on the wagon trail so far. All of which seemed to have caused a snowball effect. Colton’s family was a mix of black and white, which caused them to immediately not be treated fairly by everyone else on the wagon train. Without a second thought they would be left behind with no help, so it didn’t help when Colton’s dad accidentally shoot him in the leg. From all of the pressure of having to deal with many mixed emotions Colton’s dad abandoned his family, leaving
Colton in charge of his two younger sisters, his sick mom and brother who later died because of the lack of nutrition, and having to be in charge of all the decisions to be made for the rest of the traveling. On top of all that the weather was brutally hot during the day and freezing at night, they had to drink dirty water from puddles, they had little to no food, and they lost a yolk of oxen, which made the travel slower for Colton’s family.

Many problems have occurred to Colton as well as other members of the wagon train. However, most of the problems seem to be happening to Colton and his family. The first major problem to occur is Colton Getting shot in the leg. After that, things go downhill. Some problems were natural, some, accidents, while others were intentionally caused. One example of an intentional problem was when some members of Colton's wagon train killed Colton's family's oxen, leaving Colton without enough power to keep going at full strength.

Some of the hazards that Colton and his broken family have encountered while moving West are getting shot (Colton gets shot in the start), the oxen dying (2 of Coltons oxen are killed), the food is described as being pretty nasty as what Colton says, and lastly, his family is half white and half-black which he can't pass of as a white boy, so he is still considered black which has alot of disadvantages.

Colton's family as well as many other families face many hazards during their journey. Death, starvation, broken wagons are a few. Colton's family goes through all of these. Colton's Dad shoots him and abandons them, their mother is sick, and his baby brother dies. Then, bad weather leads to problems with their wagon and they are stranded after their oxen are killed.

Colton and The Wescotts face many hazards and difficulties. Colton, his family, and other families are extremely hungry and thirsty and there is no grocery store for them to shop at. They are stuck with gross water that is muddy, yellow, and bad tasting and some people on the wagon train are so desperate for food they used 2 of the Wescotts oxen for food. Colton now has difficulties even getting the wagon to move. They threw out almost everything they brought just so the wagon could move. Those oxen were irreplacable. Also Colton's family's wheel broke in the middle of the trail leaving them stranded for a short period of time. Illness is also a big hazard. Once you get sick there really isn't anything you can do and probably not a doctor for miles. Colton's mother is sick and his brother died, so sickness is diffinatly an issue for Colton.

Carlisa M. said...

Some of the hazards include: broken axels on wagons, accidental shootings, sickness, water and food shortage, death not many doctors, exhausten, emotional and physical pain, and discrimination. Colton won't let any of these obsticals get in his way. He wants to get his family to California safely.

Kayla G said...

Some of the many hazards that Colton and the other families of the wagon train had to face were that Colton's father left his family, leaving Colton in charge when he was still young. Also, his mother was very sick and his new brother died. Colton also lost two of his oxen because the wagon train was running out of food. With two oxen left, Colton and his family had to travel behind everyone else being practically left behind.

Quinn W said...

Some difficulties and hazards that are on the trail are things such as shortage of food, Deadly diseases, your oxen dying, and broken wagon wheels. There are people who can steal your things or you can possibly get shot.

Luke T. said...

I think the wagon train faced alot of hazards such as getting ran over by a wagon. Also, you might get stuff stolen or taken away and lose food or water. Another one is you might be left behind. You could also become very ill.

There are many hazards that Colton has to face traveling on the Organ Trail. For starters many people on the wagon train are ill such as Colton’s mother and brother. On the Organ Trail, another hazard was coming across Indians like those that Colton encountered. You could also have to face many different types of weather. In Colton’s case his family’s wagon wheel got stuck in mud and broke. Luckily, a woman came by and helped them. Some time something tragic could happen. In the book a young boy was ran over by a wagon. The only option his family had was to press on with their journey without their child. There are so many things that could go wrong on the Organ Trail, but that is just a few.

Hannah K. said...

There are many opportunities for disaster on the trail. Some including getting run over by a wagon, like Colton said a little boy did. Or, having no food. Colton's family is lacking nutrition. His family has had to drink dirty, unsanitary water. The weather is another big hazard. Colton's family, and his wagon trail, almost got struck by lightning, which was very dangerous, and could very possibly happen again.

Jaeger M. said...

there were multiple dangers that the wagon train faced that included the death of oxen, wheels breaking, and accidental shootings. others that aren't in the book yet like thievery, Indian attacks, and runaway carts.

Bailey D said...

The westbound wagon trains were hard places to live in. Many fatalities took place in the long journey they took. You could have been crushed by a wagon, killed in an Indian attack, killed by a lethal disease such as Cholera, gotten stranded and starved to death, or gotten to a mountain pass too late and froze. Sounds like fun doesn't it?

Hayley Y said...

Colton has encountered many hazards along th Oregon trail. First off, Colton was shot in the leg by his father who then left the wagon train with the family horse. Second, there was a storm that was after the wagon train. Also, sand storms and weather have a negative effect on travel. Not only did Colton lose his father and his horse, he also lost two of his oxen that were butchered and had to throw out many of their belongings to make the wagon lighter for the remaining two oxen. Though these are many hazards of the Oregon trail, there will be many more hardships for Colton, his family, and the wagon train.

Seth H. said...

Hazards weren't uncommon on the Oregon Trail. Colton has already faced a few including: broken wagon parts, steep hills, bad water, fever, and death of oxen. Colton's family actually has to go through even more hazards because he is African-American. People do not like Colton and his family on the trail and will do many things to kick them off.

There are many hazards along the Oregon Trail that Clayton and his family face. Early on in the beginning of the adventure bad weather came, it rained and one of the wagon wheels got stuck in the wet desert sand and cracked. They also faced the death of their younger brother who died of sickness. Fatigue and starvation also occured on this movement into the west.

Ian C. said...

Colton and his family and other families faced many difficulties. First Colton was shot by his father. Another one would be Colton's oxen that were slathered for food. Also there axel broke on one of the wheels and it caused them to stay behind and fix it. With a shortage of food.

Some challenges Colton and his family faced were, broken wagon wheels, shortage of food (since the gun was seized), and oxen dieing.

There are many struggles along the way for Colton and the rest. Some examples are when his dad accidentally shot him, also, there is either no water or dirty water, which is a big problem also. His new born brother dies along the way, while his father has ran away. These are but a few examples of the hardships faced by Colton.
