The hardest thing Colton has faced in the book so far, is when two of his oxen are slaughtered. Without those two oxen, the other two oxen can barely pull the heavy wagon that is mostly empty of its contents. Colton and Althea had to push the wagon along the trail, which had to be incredibly hard to do, even if you aren't in the middle of the desert. Colton's family is lucky they made it to Dayton and Colton had to be thinking while he was pushing along the trail that they might not be able to make it to Dayton. That sort of mental stress, coupled with physical exhaustion, has got to make losing the oxen the worst thing to happen to the Wescott's.

The worst thing that happened to them was most definitely Willie dieing, it was the worst because it was so devastating to Ma and the rest of the family

In my opinion the worst thing that has happend to Colton so far is his Pa leaving. I think this is the worst thing because Colton now has too become the man of his family and do all the stuff that his pa did. Colton has to drive the wagon, plus take care of his sisters and his sick ma.

In my opinion, the worst thing that happened to Colton in the first couple of chapters, was his dad being gone and his mother being deathly sick. When Colton's dad was gone, he became the, "man." He had to step up to, being the "man," and fulfill those, "man, duties." Colton has to take care of his mom, sisters, and dog. I think this has put a lot of presure on him, because he also has to decide which way they will go and the paths they choose, on their journey. Another problem he has to deal with is his is mom has gotten really sick, and he has had to find a doctor that will take care of her. Colton has taken responsibility by taking a job, as well. With his dad being gone and his mother deathly sick, puts a lot of presure on Colton, and he has a big role to fill, as his dad's role.

I think that the worst thing that happens to Colton in the first several chapters is when his father left him after shooting him. I think that this is the worst thing that happens to Colton because he feels that there is no way that they can make it to California because even his own father didnt believe that they could do it

In my opinon, the worst thing that happens to Colton is when he and his family are tricked into eating their own oxen. After they find out they have only two oxen left, they are forced to throw out their worldly possesions in order to make the wagon lighter.

I think the worst thing that happens to Colton is when he is left with just his family in the desert with only two oxen. The oxen aren't strong enough to move very far and he is forced to push the wagon with them.

IN the first chapters Colton's worst problem is that his dad shoots him and runs away. Not much could be worse then that (unless your Jedediah Smith). Even being left behind could be a little better then being shot. Colton's Dad running away is bad but was caused by the firring of the rifle.

In my opinion the worst thing that happens to clayton is that he is shot. I think this is the worst thing that happens to him for several reasons. One of the reasons is that when you are shot there is so much pain that are unbearable and he fought through with ease. Another eason i think this is the worst thing is beacause of the aftermath of the situation. After this happens his pa leaves the family on ther own. Also they have to stay behind a day or two and then play catchup which is never good. All the oother things that happen to clayton and his family are emotional, this is physical and emotional which in my opinion tops just emotional anyday.

In my opinion I think that Colton loosing his father is the worst thing. I think this because then most of the hardships that the Westcotts face on the way would not be as hard. Also Colton would not have to be the one in charge of EVERYTHING.

In my opinion, the worst thing that happened to Colton was when his Pa left him. This left Colton with the responsibility of two younger sisters, a dying brother, and a sick mother. It would be extremely difficult to find the fate of your family rested entirely on your shoulders, which is why Pa's running away was the worst thing to happen.

Madeline F. said...

In my opinion, Colton getting shot by his father was the worst thing that happened to him. The effects of that one moment have become a string of bad luck for Colton and his family. First his Pa leaves, then his mother becomes ill from heartbreak, next Colton is responsible for his family, then Willie dies. Things seem to start to look up when they have steak for dinner, but it turns out to be his own oxen. All of Colton's hardships are a result of him being shot by his father.

Cole said...

I think there are 3 major things that Colton has gone through so far. First, is when he lost his dad because he didn't know what to do and he is only 12. Second, is when he got shot because that hes made it hard for him to walk. Last, is when they killed his oxen and he had to give up all his things.

Veronica M. said...

In my opinion, I think the worst thing that happened to Colton in the first few chapters was when his father left him after accidently shooting him. This is the worst thing because this left him in charge of his family and giving him more responsibilities. Colton was probably dealing with a lot of pain because of his leg and he couldn't do much about it. Since his mother is sick and has a dying brother, Colton and his two sisters have to do all the work themselves and try to keep moving on. Colton's whole family also had to deal with the emotional pain of his father leaving.

Ashley R. said...

I think the worst thing that has happened to Colton so far is that Pa left. Colton is now the "man of the wagon" and he doesn't think he can handle all of his responsibility. He has two little sisters to take care of and a sick mother. Colton now steers the wagon which he has little experience with and has obtained the fatherly duties Pa delivered before he left.

In my opinion, the worst thing that happens to Colton, is when his father runs away. I know it would be hard for me to travel on the Oregon trail without my father! Not only does it effect Wescott family emotionally, but it effects Coltons mom tremendously. She starts not to talk and gets very sick. So without the help of pa and now ma, it must be really stressful thinking that you have to get your family across the country safely. But as the story goes on, I think Colton starts to mature and start making good decisions.

Lindsey S. said...

In my opnion, I think the worst thing Colton suffers through the first chapters of the book is losing the two oxen. He had no idea that when the lady brought over steak, he was eating his own. The family wasn't able to travel as fast as the others because of lack of oxen so they are left behind.

Frank B said...

The worst thing that has happened to Colton in the first several chapters is probably when he lost his little brother Willie. Colton was probably imagining that when he gets to the west he will be happy with all his family members. Now that his little brother died from the journey and if they make it to the west it will be hard to be able to replace a family member especially when his dad left them

Madeline D. said...

In my opinion the worst thing that Colton has gone through is probably losing his little baby brother. I say this because above all the other things he has gone through such as his dad leaving, or him having to give up all his personal items, or losing two oxen, or having a wheel break on his wagon, this one stands out. His little brother Willie will never, ever come back; no matter what. That is why i think that losing Willie is the worst thing that has happened to Colton so far.

Danielle A.5 said...

The worst thing that happened to Colton was he was shot. He was shot by his own dad as well. The dad didn't feel much remorse and left the family to fend for themselves, that's quite selfish if I do say so myself. But, back to him being shot, he could've lost his leg and not been able to walk nevertheless ride a horse and that would have ruined the book. After he was shot and the dad left the person ruining the wagon train wanted them to leave; and now Colton has to be the man of the family while suffering a gun shot wound. That is a terrible burden to bear.

quinnmo said...

In my opinion it's when his Pa leaves. Because colton at 12 has to become the man of the family. He has to make decisions and drive the wagon and get the family through the tough stuff.

hannah O said...

the worst thing that has happened to colton so far was his two oxen being slaughtered. he was doing fine being the man and all but with out his oxen his wagon wont be moving very fast.two oxen can not pull a 1000 pound wagon very fast and probly not very far.

Sean W. said...

I believe the hardest thing was having his father leave him. Colton's father shot him early in they day then cowardly took off. I'd be hard not to hate him for it and assume he's going for help. His father left him with the responsibility no young man should have to handle. Trekking through the desert with no gun, no one to protect your family but yourself, must have been a horrifying realization. It was a terribly cruel thing to happen.

Madeline C said...

In my opinion the worst thing that Colton faces is when his father leaves the family. I think this is very hard for Colton because he really looked up to his father for strength and now that his father has left Colton has to try and fill his fathers shoes and try and keep his family together which proves to be a very hard challenge, especial since Colton is only 12.

Mariel C. said...

I think the hardest thing Colton and his family went through was losing their father. If his father would have stayed the others most likely wouldn’t have killed their oxen and could have gotten to a town to save the newborn in the family. Also if he would have stayed they would still have at least one healthy adult with them to make decisions and support them. Colton even said in the book that he felt like everything was going wrong since his father left and he felt like he was a failure because he couldn’t do as well as his father could have. Without having a father figure in their family is probably the worst thing that could have happened during their trip.

Hailey S.2 said...

I think the worst trial the Westcotts face is losing their father and husband. This is the most challenging problem because after he leaves, 12 year old Colton is forced to take over, and has to face many problems. Some of these problems include, losing two oxen, and breaking a part of his wheel. If Colton's father had stayed these issues would not have been as jurastic, and they could have gotten the problems fixed eaiser.

In my opinion, the hardest thing that Colton has faced in the book so far is having to bury his baby brother and then taking hold of the reins of his wagon in his Pa's place. I think this is the hardest thing Colton has faced because his Pa ran off after shooting him and then with his shot leg he still led his family and wagon throughout the trail for the next three days until his family made it to Chinatown. It was also hard for him to have to bury his baby brother because his sick mom didn't know her baby had died, and she still doesn't, and he can't even face his mom to tell her.

Delaney M. said...

I think that the worst thing Colton has faced, so far, is Pa running away. This is hard for Colton because he isn't used to caring for a sick mother and two little sisters. Colton has to be "the man of the house" even though he is only twelve, and Colton isn't used to being in charge of his family.

Evan S. said...

In my opinion, the worst thing that has happened to colton was his 'Pa' leaving him. His mom was sick and he had three siblings to look after, let alone a large wagon with all of their belongings. It doesn't help that the entire wagon train is against them for being of a different race. This event put Colton in charge, obviously a place he hasn't been before.

Dallas V. said...

in my opinion the worst part is his dad leaving. I think this is the worst because now colton has to take role as the man of the family and do the work his dad did.

Danielle B said...

i feel that the hardest thing Colton has faced in the book so far is when Colton dad leaves his family. its already hard enough being the outcasts of the wagon train because they are a mixed family, but when Colton dad leaves Coltons family while his mom and baby sibling is sick really takes a toll on Colton. Not only does Colton have to step up and take charge of his family to stay alive and keep up with the wagon train, Colton also has to spend every day wondering why his dad left and if his dad will ever come back

Jack S. said...

I think that the worst thing that has happened to Colton is when his family's 2 oxen are butchered. The effects from that include being slowed down, being forced to get rid of most items from their wagon and having the rest of the wagon train move on because their wagon is now too slow. The worst part is they are left to fend for themselves. They are separated from the others and have no weapons since the wagon master took their rifle after the accidental shooting.

Ethan P said...

I believe that the worst thing that has happned to Colton so far has been his father leaving after accidentally shooting him. This is the worst thing that happens because it places all responsibility on Colton and leaves him with an injury to inhibit him from doing his newly aquired duties even more.

I believe the biggest problem faced by Colton and his family faced is the desertion of their dad. Without him, the family is mistreated by the other members of the wagon train. Also, now the oldest capable person in the family is 12 years old and lacks much experience.

In my opinion the worst thing that has happened to Colton so far is his father abandoning him and his family. This left Colton under a lot of stress such as : leaving him guilty for his brothers death, worrying about his mother not being able to make it alive, and having to worry about making money to support his sisters and mom.

Brayden P. said...

Pretty much getting shot is..uh pretty bad to say the least. He is shot in the leg and then his father just ditches their family. Mom sick, young daughter and oldest kid is Colton at 12. How does he expect them to last? He just leaves, Colton in pain, and then when the oxen are killed, it must've been pretty grueling to carry on all the way to Dayton. Getting shot would hurt unimaginably, and on the trail, pushing a wagon, it's about 100x worse.

Erin B. said...

I think the worst thing that happens to Colton at the beginning of the novel is his father shoots him then leaves the family in the middle of the Oregon Trail. Being shot caused him to have a lot of trouble putting weight on his foot and his is now not able to do all the things he could before. Then, his father leaves. Colton now is the leader of the famiy, with his mother bieing sick. He was stripped of his childhood and now has to step up to the challenge of being head of their wagon. plus his mother is african ammerican. being female and african american means that no one will take he seriously or treat her with respect. Being shot and coltons father leaving really put a lot of hardship on Colton and The Wescotts.

In my opinion, the worst thing that has happened to Colton so far is when two of his oxen are killed. This leaves his entire family stranded in the middle of the desert. Colton and his sisters had to leave behind most of their belongings and even then they barely made it to Dayton. After that, Colton learned that he had to buy four new oxen to make it to California.

Carlisa M. said...

In my opinion, the worst thing to happen was that Colton is being claimed as the "man" of the family now since his father left. Also, he has to figure out ways to keep his mother and sisters healthy since they're in the middle of the desert. His family isn't emotionally unstable, but also physically. His mother is dying of sickness, and his baby brother has already died. Colton has to fill all of the responsibilities not only as a man, but also as a man in a father's shoes.

Kayla G said...

I believe that the worst thing that happened to Colton is his father leaving. With his father gone, Colton is left in charge of his family, while still young. Colton had to put through taking care of his family alone being the only man left.

Quinn W said...

Colton has gone through a lot of very tough things so far but I think the worst thing that happened to him is when his Pa shot him and ran away. I think this is the worst because first he is shot by his own father and then he will never see him again.

Luke T. said...

I think it is when his father leaves. The main reason is he has to control and lead the family. He also has to deal with other difficulties such as his brother passing and controlling the oxen and feeding them all.

abbyd. said...

I think that the worst thing that has happened to Colton so far is being shot by his father. I think this because it causes him a ton of emotional and physical pain. Physical because there is not medicine like there is today to take away the pain. There was also not a real doctor close by to check out the wound. It is also emotional because his own father shot him. Colton knows it was an accident, but his father just ran away and never came back. I bet every time he looks at his leg he thinks of that moment. I could never push myself through something like that, so that is why I think that is the worst thing that has happened to Colton so far.

Hannah K. said...

The hardest thing that has happened to Colton, in my opinion, has to be losing his little brother, Willie. Even though Colton has gone through some horrible situations, like his father abandoning them, or their wheels breaking, or losing the oxen, this one, i think, is the worst. No matter what they do, Willie will never be able to experience the new world, or even the world at all.

Jaeger M. said...

in my opinion the worst thing that happened to colton and his family is colton's dad shooting him then running away. this is because it caused emotional stress to colton and the family and physical pain on colton's part

Bailey D said...

I believe, out of all the horrendous things that happened to Colton in the first part of the book, the worst thing that happened was when his brother died. I mean, it was pretty awful when he got shot, and when his dad left, but his baby brother dying, to me, was the worst. When Willie died, his mother became even sicker, so she was no help, and everything seemed to just keep spiraling down after that.

Hayley Y said...

The worst thing that has happened to Colton in the book so far is losing his dad. Without Colton's dad, Colton is left to fend for 3 girls and his brother Willie. Along the way, Pa could've helped save the oxen that were slaughtered and help fix the broken wheel. Without Pa, Colton doesn't know what to do but be strong and tough everything out.

Seth H. said...

I think that the hardest thing that Colton has faced is his little brother Willie dying. Willie dying has impacted Colton and his family greatly, even though his mother doesn't know yet. Colton and his sister's morale took a huge blow once Willie died.

Dylan C. said...

I think that the hardest thing colton and his family have faced in the book so far is when his dad left him after shooting him. Without his dad helping colton the journey is going to be much harder. He now has to take care of everything because his ma is very sick.

Zach L said...

I think the hardest thing Colton faces early in the book is his dad shooting him I think it is the hardest thing for him because it is what stared the train of bad events on the wagon train

Anonymous said...

In my opinion the hardest challenge this young boy named Colton has faced would have to be the time when the nice lady of their wagon train offered them some steaks untill they found out that the oxen it had come from was thier own. Without the help of the two oxen they would have to abandon most of their belongings so the wagon would become lighter so that the oxen left could pull it without any other help. This put their family in a lot of stress with having to leave behind most of the stuff they needed for the trip. Before too long they made it to a town which led to help.

Ian C. said...

I think the hardest thing for Colton was the oxen because they relied heavily on the oxen to progress them through the desert. ALso another thing that was hard was the death of there brother. This could have caused emotional problems for Colton.

Molly M said...

In my opinon the worst thing that happened was that Pa left and Willie died. Its bad because Ma was already devastated that Pa left and then her new baby boy just died right after. Also because Ma was very ill and she might have become depressed.

I think that the hardest part of the journey is at the beginning. This is when Colton's father shoots him in the leg (accidentally of course), leaving Colton to fend for his family. Not only did it leave them alone, it also left him emotionally scarred. That's what I think was the worst part of the book.
